A new era of securitization

The securitization market in India began evolving from the mid-1990s when originators such as ICICI and Citigroup took the lead in developing it at an institutional level.

The issuance of securitization saw exponential growth from 2001 to 2005. In those four years volumes nearly doubled every year.

Although, issuance volumes dropped in 2006 with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issuing regulations for securitization of standard assets, most observers expect that investor appetite for securitized paper will steadily grow in the long run with increased regulatory recognition and clarification of ambiguous issues.
