Alpha Partners plans to hire two or three lawyers to staff its office in Bengaluru, which opened last month. Arvind Moorchung, a senior consultant who joined the firm in March, heads the firm in the city.

“Bengaluru has been part of our business plan for long,” says Akshat Pande, the founder and managing partner of the firm. “As we serve a number of startups, technology companies and represent clients on venture capital and private equity transactions, Bengaluru was a natural extension,” he told India Business Law Journal. “Additionally, we were drawn by [the city’s] expanding real estate market.”

The office, located in UB City, will offer advice on business and company setup; corporate M&A, private equity and venture capital; employment law; real estate and infrastructure; start-ups and early stage companies; and litigation and dispute resolution.

Before joining Alpha, Moorchung was a partner at King & Partridge, where he practised for 18 years advising clients on commercial litigation, labour law, consumer law, contracts and trademarks, and representing them before various courts, tribunals and authorities.

While Moorchung described his time at King & Partridge as “extremely fulfilling”, he decided to take a sabbatical to teach at the School of Law, Alliance University in Bengaluru and consider alternative plans for the future. Although he found teaching “immensely satisfying”, Moorchung was keen to return to practice. So when Pande approached him to set up Alpha’s practice in the city, Moorchung said he “leapt at the chance”.

“Arvind is a seasoned litigator and an employment lawyer,” said Pande. “Employment law practice is in great demand in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, specifically at IT companies. [He] brings a wealth of experience and knowledge of the local market and the language. Other than everything else, we have been great friends since our LLM days.”

In favour of a slow and steady approach to growth, Alpha has no immediate plans for further expansion, but Pande said the firm was keen to add new practice verticals such as taxation advisory.

Alpha was set up in 2012 and has its headquarters in Delhi. The firm has 15 lawyers.
