Introduction

Ira A Eddymurthy is a founding partner of SSEK Legal Consultants and one of Indonesia’s most experienced and most highly regarded lawyers. She has more than three decades of experience advising multinationals and domestic companies on Indonesia’s complex regulatory environment.

Ira is recognised as one of Indonesia’s top banking, capital markets and M&A lawyers by leading legal directories. She was named Woman Lawyer of the Year at the 2017 Asian Legal Business Indonesia Law Awards. Chambers & Partners quoted clients praising Ira’s “sophisticated knowledge of Indonesian law” and “comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the commercial aims of clients.”

Ira’s recent representations include acting for the Indonesian Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises and Pertamina, Indonesia’s state-owned oil and gas corporation, in the formation of an oil and gas holding SOE, a US$4 billion deal that created Indonesia’s largest state-owned holding company. She was Indonesian counsel for Procter & Gamble in its US$4.2 billion global acquisition of the consumer health business of Merck, and advised Siam Cement Group, through Thai Containers Group, on its acquisition of two Indonesian manufacturing companies.

Ira acted as Indonesian counsel to Alibaba in its US$1 billion purchase of a controlling stake in online retailer Lazada. She advised GlaxoSmithKline on the Indonesian aspects of its global transaction with Novartis that saw the companies complete a series of asset swaps, and acted for Dai-ichi Life Insurance in its US$337 million acquisition of a stake in Indonesia’s PT Panin Life, the first M&A transaction involving an Indonesian insurance company to go before the OJK, Indonesia’s financial services regulator.

Ira graduated from the University of Indonesia Faculty of Law in 1984 and was a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley (Boalt Hall) School of Law from 1990-91.

Ira is acting chairwoman of the Commercial Law and Practice Commission of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Indonesia. She represented the Indonesian jurisdiction of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association from 2002-08.
