Capstone Legal, a dispute resolution and corporate advisory law firm in India, has joined forces with Olisa Agbakoba Legal (OAL), a leading Nigerian law firm, to provide legal services to international clients.
It is the first tie-up between a Nigerian and an Indian law firm to provide legal services that involve multiple jurisdictions collaboratively.
“Nigeria has the highest GDP in Africa, and India is now the fifth-largest economy in the world. There is a growing need for specialized legal services to cater to the needs of companies and high net-worth individuals (HNWIs) in both countries,” Ashish Kumar Singh, managing partner of Capstone Legal, told India Business Law Journal.
“The tie-up can benefit Indian as well as Nigerian entities,” said Singh. “There are many Nigerian companies and HNWIs that face legal problems in India. As international law firms are currently not allowed to conduct legal proceedings in India, a tie-up will help in solving complex legal disputes in the Indian legal system involving the application of Indian law.”
Singh said COVID-19 had resulted in a decrease in work from international partners. “But I see it as an opportunity for law firms to collaborate and build internal systems and processes,” he said. “As of now, our tie-up with OAL has not faced any hurdles.”
OAL focuses on providing services in dispute resolution/arbitration, debt recovery and insolvency, commercial litigation, maritime law, development, public interest law, international disputes, and regulatory and compliance.
Capstone Legal specializes in cross-border disputes, execution of arbitral awards, and corporate advisory.
