Introduction

Prior to private practice, Dr Steven Yu was with the Shanghai World Trade Organization Affairs Consultation Centre, the first Chinese WTO service body, where he advised government agencies, enterprises and industry associations on trade compliance upon China’s WTO access. Yu started his private practice in early 2003, focusing on trade law, foreign investment law and corporate law. He leads the firm’s international practice, representing Chinese clients to safeguard their trade and investment interests in various jurisdictions, including the US and the EU, while also assisting foreign chambers and international companies in their interests before Chinese authorities and courts.

Yu was once a visiting fellow at Georgetown University and worked in Washington-based law firms for several years. In 2013, he was listed in the All China Lawyers Association’s Chinese Leading Lawyers of International Practice. He was named Client Choice Top 20 by Asia Law Business three times (2015, 2016 and 2019), and A List – China’s Top 100 Lawyers by China Business Law Journal since 2016. Yu is highly recommended in several areas by Chambers and Partners, Legal 500 and Corporate INTL. He is a senior adviser for Jiangsu MOFCOM, and a legal adviser to Shanghai MOFCOM. He is an adjunct professor in law schools, such as Koguan Law School of Shanghai Jiaotong University, East China University of Political Science and Law and Shanghai University of International Business and Economics. He is an arbitrator at Shanghai Arbitration Commission. Yu has written in many publications on international law and practice.

Yu graduated from the Law School of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law (Wuhan) with master’s degree and received his PhD from Fudan University (Shanghai). He works daily in Chinese and English. In addition to good command of legal expertise, Yu has demonstrated strong capability in coordinating among different cultural and legal environments, which has made great contribution to his service to both international clients for their businesses in China and domestic companies, which are expanding internationally.
