The former legal head of United Breweries (UB), Chetan Chopra, has joined Flipkart as assistant general counsel (GC). Chopra will be based in Bengaluru and has moved to the new role after a year of being with the country’s largest beermaker.
“I’m certain that their diverse operations will help me broaden my learning curve,” Chopra told India Business Law Journal. “[This will help me] get a better grip on complex business issues, especially under an able leader like [Flipkart Group GC] Bijoya Roy. I wish to have a long and mutually beneficial stint here.”
While at UB, Chopra’s key responsibilities were handling critical litigation, providing plant support and compliance, and support to business. He said the e-commerce sector gave lawyers an opportunity to touch upon unprecedented legal issues/propositions. “The regulatory landscape is still evolving and trying to keep up with the neck-breaking speed with which inventions and new products keep mushrooming in the tech and e-commerce space.”
While also previously at the ride-hailing platform Ola, Chopra held meetings with regulators to gain clarity on the legal position of new regulations. He was a legal director at Ola for nearly two years before joining UB in November 2018.
Chopra worked with law firms J Sagar Associates and Amarchand Mangaldas, prior to its split, before transitioning to in-house roles in 2013.
