FTZ co-operations mark beginning of legal evolution

One of Shanghai’s top lawyers says recent measures to free up co-operation between foreign and domestic law firms in the free trade zone (FTZ) heralds the beginning of China’s opening up to foreign competition in the legal field, at least in the mid-term.

Xu Guojian, vice president of the China Society of Private International Law and a member of the Administration Reconsideration Committee of Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, told China business Law Journal that Shanghai’s Justice Bureau will continue gradually opening to the international legal community, with a final objective of allowing Chinese lawyers and foreign lawyers to practise together and establish full-fledged Chinese-foreign joint partnership firms.
