Gravitas partner Tanuj Sud told India Business Law Journal that the firm would not shy away from seeking out another collaboration in the near future. “Expansion is part of the plan … within the next three years, we hope to open one more office and add another 10-15 lawyers to our team.”

Sud and Sujeet Das, former partners at Khaitan Sud & Partners, and Varij Sharma, a principal associate at the firm, together launched the New Delhi-based Gravitas Legal in 2016. The firm specializes in banking and finance, projects, real estate, general corporate advisory and more recently, litigation. The merged entity has a total of 21 lawyers.

Amit Karkhanis established Kay Legal & Associates in 2008. The firm offered advice on legal matters affecting the medical and healthcare industry, and on intellectual property issues. It also assisted clients on litigation and advisory relating to international law, and laws linked to the World Trade Organization, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, IT and telecoms.

Sud said extending the firm’s reach to Mumbai was “a logical and natural step” given the nature of the firm’s practice areas. He told India Business Law Journal that they were in search of a firm “focused on a particular kind of practice with all the essential dynamics and a good reputation” and that “while there were a couple of options, we quickly zeroed in on Kay Legal.

“We found a perfect synergy with Amit,” said Sud. “[He] is a renowned litigator and an extremely humble and affable person, and perfect to spearhead our litigation practice. Additionally, his practice in medico-legal consulting is niche and not many lawyers in India have as many years of experience in this field as him.”

Karkhanis said he, Sud, Das and Sharma hit it off on their first meeting, sharing the same vision for the combined firm’s growth and development. “I thoroughly enjoy litigation and after practising in Mumbai for several years, I wanted to increase my offerings in Delhi for clients in a more structured
fashion,” he said.

Bithika Anand, the founder and CEO of Legal League Consulting, along with Nipun Bhatia, assistant vice president of strategic management and process redesigning, facilitated the merger. “Amit adds the vintage factor to the young and fast-growing practice of Gravitas Legal and I am sure that with pooled synergies, they will achieve their vision for the Mumbai practice of the firm,” said Anand.
