Anand Pathak has extensive experience in advising clients on international mergers and acquisitions, private equity investments, and European and Indian laws on competition and international trade. He is admitted to practise law in the US and India, and has represented clients in mergers and acquisitions in the US, the EU and in India. Prior to joining P&A Law Offices, he practiced law in Brussels, New York, Cleveland and Palo Alto.
Anand attended all the negotiation meetings of the European Council that led to the adoption of the EU’s merger control regulation (Regulation 4064/89), and has represented clients in complex European Commission investigations and merger notifications under EU competition laws. He has represented clients in cross-border acquisitions and joint ventures, including Daiichi Sankyo in its acquisition of Ranbaxy Laboratories, Tech Mahindra in its acquisition of Satyam Computer Services, Schneider Electric in its acquisition of Luminous Power Technologies, and the acquisitions of HCL Technologies, Rediff.com and Tech Mahindra outside India. He recently represented the shareholders of eTouch in the sale of eTouch to Virtusa Corporation and of Global Edge Software to Altran Technologies. He is currently representing several companies before the Competition Commission of India, the National Company Appellate Tribunal and the Supreme Court of India in matters relating to mergers, cartels and abuse of dominance, and in financing and M&A transactions.
Anand was presented with the National Law Day Award in 2005 by the prime minister of India for his unique contribution in the field of corporate law and for bringing foreign investments into India. He has received several awards for M&A and competition law, including Best M&A Lawyer in India for every year from 2008 to 2016, and India – Competition Lawyer of the Year for every year from 2013 to 2018.
Anand has an LLB from the University of Cambridge, England, and an LLM and MA in international and development economics from Yale University. He has worked at the European Court of Justice, Luxembourg, and in the Competition Division of the Legal Service in the European Commission, Brussels. He was a member of a committee constituted by the Indian government in 2018 for reviewing Indian competition laws.
