Jingtian & Gongcheng recently added six partners – Zhao Shuzhou, Shen Xiangman, Hu Jian, Zhang Kehua, Yang Bo and Zhou Kaiguo – to strengthen the firm’s service capability in maritime and international trade, and foreign-related commercial dispute resolution.

Guangzhou-based Zhao Shuzhou told Asia Business Law Journal that as Chinese companies go global, and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) plans advance, maritime lawyers in China are realizing many business opportunities.

Joining from Wang Jing & Co, Zhao Shuzhou specializes in shipping and maritime, international trade, financial insurance and financial leasing, with experience in domestic and cross-border litigation and arbitration. Also specializing in these fields, Shen Xiangman has more than 30 years of experience and is deputy director of the legal professional committee of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Co-operation Promotion Association.

Hu Jian has been assisting domestic clients in handling overseas investment projects since 2012 involving Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia and other countries in the region. Focusing on foreign direct investment and M&A, Zhang Kehua’s clients are mainly large and medium-sized multinational companies from Europe and the US.

Yang Bo has extensive experience in international trade, especially in the field of commodity trading. Zhou Kaiguo’s focus includes domestic and foreign commercial litigation and arbitration, financial and securities compliance, infrastructure and energy.

“With the development of our business, we need a bigger platform,” said Zhao Shuzhou. “We also understand that Jingtian & Gongcheng hopes to enhance its maritime and cross-border legal services, especially to improve the firm’s layout related to the BRI and GBA.”

February marks the one-year anniversary of the launch of the GBA’s Outline Development Plan. Zhao said Guangzhou would play a vital role in maritime legal services in the GBA. “The important enterprises and institutions related to maritime in South China are mainly located in Guangzhou,” he said. “After joining Jingtian & Gongcheng, we will rely on the firm’s platform to integrate resources, enhance our strength and reach out to more areas.”
