LexCounsel has opened an office in Bhubaneswar to capitalize on the opportunities in the resource-rich state of Odisha. “There are many national and multinational companies in Odisha,” said founding partner Seema Jhingan, noting that these companies operate in the tourism, healthcare, food processing, petrochemicals, electronics and textiles sectors.
Jhingan said the concept of a full-service law firm was relatively new in the state, which was instead dominated by individual practitioners with fixed specializations. “Owing to this, large companies operating from Odisha are constrained to look at law firms operating out of tier-1 cities to provide them comprehensive legal solutions.”
As the Odisha bench of the National Company Law Tribunal has been given the jurisdiction for neighbouring Chhattisgarh state, Jhingan sees opportunities coming from outside the state as well. “All matters under legislation like the Companies Act, as well as the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, for these two regions would be dealt with by this bench.”
The firm has appointed Abhijeet Das as a partner to head the Odisha office. Das joins from Phoenix Legal, where he worked as a principal associate in New Delhi. He had previously worked with LexCounsel for five years from 2011 as a senior associate.
“Having Abhijeet – a product of our firm itself – there also gives us complete confidence about the quality of the services on offer by the Odisha office and also ensures smooth coordination between our offices.”
LexCounsel’s primary office is in New Delhi. In addition to the new Odisha office, it has associate offices in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune and Goa. Jhingan explains that the relationship with the associate office is “at an arms’ length and work is co-shared, referred and exchanged”.
Das has more than 10 years’ experience and has also worked with Singhania & Partners and Vaish Associates. His primary areas of expertise are corporate commercial advisory, mergers and acquisitions, life sciences and healthcare and dispute resolution.
With Das’ joining, LexCounsel has four partners and 35 lawyers.
