Maneesha Kongovi, who joined Argus Partners as a partner in the disputes team in Bengaluru in July, said her decision was motivated by the importance the firm attached to the practice.
“Litigation, as a practice area, is valued within the firm,” said Kongovi of her decision, adding that she wanted to work in the city.
Kongovi practised before the Supreme Court, high court, civil court, National Company Law Tribunal and arbitration tribunals after creating her own practice in 2014.
“Almost all partners have travelled to Bengaluru at different times, despite their busy schedules, to ease the transition period for my team and I,” she said. Her team members Shivabhushan Hatti, Anusha Chatra and Yamini Harish also joined the firm as associates.
Kongovi began her career in the litigation team of Amarchand Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff and Co but followed partners MP Bharucha and Alka Bharucha when they left the firm to establish Bharucha & Partners in 2008.
After this, she worked with counsel Aditya Sondhi’s practice in 2009 on a range of litigation matters. She said firm culture in litigation was not as “vibrant” or “developed” in Bengaluru at this time.
The disputes practice of Argus saw equity partner Aditya Narayan leave the firm in June along with his wife, Megha Narayan, who worked in the indirect tax practice as a partner, and M&A and corporate partner Siddharth Raja, to start their own firm, Saakshya Law.
The firm had hired HSA Advocates senior disputes partner Abeezar E Faizullabhoy, and associate partners Shahen Pradhan and Murtaza Kachwalla, in February.
