Dear Madam,

It is said that when a person dies, he does not die alone. A part of many other people – his family members and friends – dies with him.

The official death toll from the tragedy in Mumbai may be 163, but that does not take into account the countless number of people who were associated with the innocent victims. These people will continue to live with the sheer horror of the tragic and unprecedented events.

The incident was unprecedented in many ways: it was a war declared upfront; the elite classes were targeted, especially foreigners; the manner of the attacks, and the act of taking hostages, had not been witnessed in India before; and the attack was focused on prestigious landmarks that have become associated with India’s booming economy.
