Former equity partner at Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan (L&S) S Seetharaman has set up a new firm, Seetharaman & Associates (S&A), in New Delhi, with Atul Sharma, the former managing director of the Geneva office of L&S.

Seetharaman and Sharma left L&S in early October this year. Seetharaman said he wanted to create a firm that focuses on the delivery of professional services. “We would like to spend more time in the delivery of professional services than on doing administrative work. In a big law firm, it becomes unavoidable as one moves up in the hierarchy.”

The members of the new law firm will only have the designation of advocate. “I want to create an organization where everyone is treated like an advocate as opposed to associate, senior associate, principal associate, partner and so on. Such a stratified hierarchy is highly inappropriate in a professional set up, though it may be required in government departments or large commercial enterprises,” Seetharaman told India Business Law Journal. Though, he admitted that hierarchy could not altogether be eliminated.

S&A currently has four advocates and two paralegals. “In the next six to 12 months, we expect to have about 10 to 12 professionals formed into three or four groups handling trade remedy law, i.e., antidumping, subsidies and safeguards, WTO law (both advisory and disputes), competition law, general corporate law, Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, etc,” said Seetharaman. However, the firm was not looking to expand to any other city in this time period.

Seetharaman has 18 years of experience and headed the WTO and competition law practices at L&S. Sharma has over 12 years of experience in WTO law, including trade remedies.
