Sandeep Parekh, a former head of legal affairs and enforcement at the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), has set up a boutique law firm in Mumbai. The firm, which is called Finsec Law Advisors, specializes in capital markets, securities and financial regulations. It currently consists of Parekh and KD Zacharias, a former legal head of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), who is an independent adviser to the firm.

“Given my background at the regulator … I found the idea of setting up my own shop more attractive and entrepreneurial than joining a big law firm,” Parekh told India Business Law Journal. “[Finsec] aims to be a lawyer’s lawyer, and in fact already has a law firm retaining it for specialized securities work,” he added.

Parekh, who specializes in securities regulations, investment regulations, private equity, corporate governance and financial regulations, said recruiting dedicated and talented lawyers would be a challenge. “The firm will grow only if it can get the right kind of people, and is able to deliver the highest quality of service,” he said. “Finsec has already made a presentation at National Law School, Bangalore, and will visit all the leading law schools to attract the best young talent.”
