OnJune 23, the State Council issued a white paper entitled “State Council Decision on the Strengthening of Food Safety”. We highlight below its contents and comment on its implications.
The decision sets two goals:
- Within three years, achieve significant food safety improvements – effectively restrain food safety-related illegal activities and crimes, and resolve prominent food safety issues;
- Within five years, make regulatory bodies and mechanisms, regulatory standards and technical inspection systems more scientifically sound, and get all sectors of society more involved in food safety supervision in order to drastically improve food safety.
Although the above goals seem overly general and undefined, the decision does indicate areas of heightened supervision and specifically names several prominent food safety issues.
